Baraboo Car Insurance Requirements

Stephanie Thompson, Estate Planning Attorney of Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC · Jun 28, 2014 ·

baraboo car insuranceDo you live in Baraboo, Wisconsin? Do you have intentions to operate a motor vehicle? If so, you must carry the minimum amount of car insurance required by the state.

In Baraboo, Wisconsin, the law requires that you have enough coverage to cover expenses associated with an accident in which you were at-fault.

To meet this requirement, your policy must provide the following types of coverage:

  • Liability
  • Underinsured motorist
  • Uninsured motorist

Per the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, minimum liability coverage amounts in the state are as follows:

  • $10,000 for property damage
  • $25,000 for the injury or death of one person
  • $50,000 for the injury or death of more than one person

Optional Coverage

If you have the minimum coverage detailed above, you are legal to operate a motor vehicle as a resident of Wisconsin. That being said, there is optional coverage that can further protect you in the event of an accident.

When shopping for a policy, discuss the following with your car insurance agent:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Medical payments
  • Rental reimbursement
  • Towing and labor

Don’t Think you need Insurance?

Those who believe they can get away without buying car insurance are often surprised to find out that this can land them in hot water. If proof of insurance is requested by law enforcement and unable to be provided, the following could be the result:

  • Operating a motor vehicle in Wisconsin without insurance can lead to a maximum fine of $500
  • Providing fraudulent proof of insurance can lead to a maximum fine of $5,000
  • Drivers who are unable to show proof of insurance when requested can be fined a maximum of $10

As you can see, the fine for not having insurance is much greater than the inability to produce an insurance card.

Now that you know the Baraboo car insurance requirements, you can make sure you always have the appropriate level of coverage.  If you are injured due to someone else’s negligence, go to KH-LAW.net to schedule your free consultation to get the compensation you deserve.
