The Holiday Season
Every year, the holiday shopping season does wonders for local businesses. This doesn’t mean that the rest of the year is a waste, but it goes without saying that many people shop more in November and December than they do the other 10 months.
For example, Small Business Saturday, which is known as the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, is a big event every year.
In short, this is when consumers are urged to shop at local small businesses, not just the big box stores and malls they have grown accustomed to.
Here is a recent passage from a Madison.com article that sums up the approach of this event:
“The marketing campaign known as Small Business Saturday, now in its seventh year, is expected to give many retailers and service providers a bump in sales. Started in the aftermath of the recession, the campaign has increased awareness about shopping at local small businesses, not just malls and big-box stores that draw consumers on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.”
While some people don’t understand the benefits associated with the event, others have come to realize that giving small businesses a boost is a big deal.
It doesn’t matter if you live or work in Madison or another local community, it’s safe to assume that you took notice of this event, in some way or form, this past year.
While Small Business Saturday is a big deal for many reasons, it’s important to note that it’s just the beginning of the shopping season. Local, independent stores also do their best throughout the rest of the shopping season to compete with larger companies.
With each passing year, small companies continue to make headway, proving that they are here for the long haul.
To back this up, the same Madison.com article touched on a recent study conducted by the Kauffman Foundation. Get this:
“In the foundation’s annual Main Street Entrepreneurship report, which Kauffman based on Census Bureau figures, the percentage of new companies that survived into their fifth year of operation rose to 48.7 percent in 2014, up from 45.9 the previous year. The latest number is a three-decade high, Kauffman says.”
As you can see, new companies are performing better than ever before. If this number continues to rise, it’s only natural that more and more people will branch out on their own.
Business owners know that they need to perform at a high level throughout the year, however, they also know that the holiday season can provide a big boost.
This year is no exception, with consumers flocking to stores and online websites to get their shopping done.
If you’re thinking about starting a small business, you’re in the same boat as many others. While this sounds scary and intimidating in many ways, you shouldn’t back down from your aspirations.
