Wisconsin Divorce Law: Choosing an Experienced Lawyer

Stephanie Thompson, Estate Planning Attorney of Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC · Oct 25, 2013 ·

Divorce is tough.  Choosing the right lawyer and law firm can be the difference between having a bright and successful post-divorce life or a life weighted down by the financial issues of the past.  Although experience should not be your only characteristic of your divorce attorney it should be in the top two or three.

I have been practicing divorce law for almost 30 years and can recall the mistakes based upon the lack of knowledge and experience that I made early in my career.  All of the energy and aggressiveness that I had early on did not make up for my lack of experience of both the legal system but also the law and how to best achieve a successful outcome for my clients.

The most important factor is choosing a lawyer who is willing to listen and understand your concerns and the issues of your case.  Once that is aligned then you need to consider the attorney’s experience.  An experienced divorce attorney should be able to handle your case for less cost than a less experienced attorney.  The reason is the experienced attorney knows how to draft the documents, prepare for hearings and conduct hearings in a much more efficient manner than the less experienced attorney.

An experienced attorney will generally move your case forward faster because of the experience they have both knowing the law as well as the other attorney, perhaps a Guardian ad Litem and of course the Court Commissioner or Judge and how he or she handles difficult issues.  There really is no substitute for experience.  Without that experience, mistakes, oversights and delays can occur.

Choosing an experienced divorce attorney is no different than any other professional.  Remember, a degree and a license do not mean that every professional is the same.  Most people would prefer to have their taxes done by the experienced CPA as compared to the CPA with only a few years experience.  The same is true for chiropractors, dentists, etc.  Think about it, would you prefer to have your surgery done by the experienced surgeon or the surgeon with little or no experience with the procedure?  The choice is no different with your divorce attorney.  An experienced divorce attorney can provide many benefits that will help you through your divorce quicker, with better results and for less money.

We have been representing families in divorce for almost 30 years.  We would be glad to discuss your concerns with a no cost, no obligation consultation.  Should you be in the need of a divorce attorney whether for divorce or post-divorce matters please contact Attorney Mark L. Krueger in the Baraboo area at (608) 356-3961, Madison area at (608) 824-9540 or Statewide at (866) 455-2993.  Please feel free to email at mark@kh-law.net and check out our website at https://khtlawyers.com.  Remember, at Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC we listen, we care, we get results!
