Did you receive a seasonal flu vaccine this year? This year’s flu season has been extremely vigorous, and early estimates according to the CDC are at 25 – 32% effective rate, contrasted by Canada’s estimate of 18% and Australia’s estimate of 10% (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/67/wr/mm6706a2.htm?s_cid=mm6706a2_w) .
Beyond the effectiveness of the Flu vaccine, is the number of cases being compensated in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, also known as the Vaccine Court continue. Every year millions of Americans receive vaccinations for a variety illnesses. While vaccines are administered to prevent illness, in some cases, adverse reactions and side effects are experienced as a result of vaccination. One side-effect, that most people are familiar with, is the pain in the shoulder associated with receiving a vaccination. However, in some cases the pain can be severe and can last much longer than normal. These cases of severe and long-standing pain are known as Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration, or SIRVA. Another injury that is often compensated in the VICP in correlation with the flu vaccine is GBS (Guillain-Barre syndrome). GBS is a rare disorder in which your body’s immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations often begin in the legs and can quickly spread to the arms and upper body, and can be so intense that the muscles are almost entirely paralyzed. In its most severe form GBS is a medical emergency.
The December 2017 Department of Justice presentation to the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines, an Advisory board within the US Department of Health and Human Services, revealed that more than 80% of the case compensated in 3rd quarter of 2017 were from injuries received from the Flu Vaccine. Of those Seasonal Flu Vaccine cases nearly 70% of them were due to SIRVA or GBS.
