What to do if You’re Injured in a Motorcycle Accident

Stephanie Thompson, Estate Planning Attorney of Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC · Sep 27, 2016 ·

accident

As a motorcyclist, you know that hitting the open road is just about as good as it gets. You enjoy everything from the sound of your bike to the wind in your face.

Unfortunately, there are times when motorcyclists are put in a bad spot. For example, poor roadway maintenance can cause an accident. The same can hold true for another driver who doesn’t want to share the road.

If you happen to find yourself involved in a motorcycle accident in the future, it’s important that you know which steps to take.

First things first, do your best to remove yourself from harm’s way. If you are able to do so, this means moving your bike to the side of the road. This lessens the likelihood of being involved in another accident with a passing vehicle.

Of course, there are times when this is not possible. If you are injured and unable to move yourself, don’t attempt to do so. Instead, stay put until police and/or an ambulance arrives on the scene.

Note: if you attempt to move after you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, there is a chance that you could cause additional harm. This is particularly true if you have suffered some type of neck or back injury.

You should never attempt to leave the scene of an accident if you are injured in any way, shape, or form. Your best bet is to wait for an ambulance and have it transport you to a local hospital.

At the hospital, you will be examined by a medical team that is experienced in the types of injuries you are facing. Soon enough, you will have a clear idea as to what types of injuries you suffered and how to treat each one.

Don’t be surprised if you are diagnosed with an injury that you are unaware of. For example, an internal injury to an organ is one that you cannot see from the outside. However, this is extremely dangerous if left untreated.

Once you are stabilized, it’s time to think about the future. Most importantly, you should know what to expect in terms of follow up treatment. You must have a long term treatment plan in place, as this is the best way to ensure that each and every injury is taken care of in the appropriate manner.

At some point, you should learn more about your legal rights. You may soon find that a negligent party was responsible for your accident. This could include:

  • Another motorist, such as somebody driving a passenger car or truck.
  • Motorcycle manufacturer.
  • The community that was responsible for maintaining the roadway.

We discuss this in great detail on our website, noting the following:

“Let’s face it: you enjoy riding your bike, but probably don’t enjoy reading up on personal injury law. When you hire an experienced attorney, you don’t have to spend your time on this. Instead, let us take over and lead you the way. We are Real Lawyers for Real People.”

It’s not something you look forward to, but if you are injured in a car accident you need to consider your options in regards to taking legal action. This could be the best way to receive compensation for injuries and other damages.

At our law firm, we know that this is one of the worst things you can go through. Dealing with the aftermath of a motorcycle accident is never easy, especially if you have suffered a life changing injury.

Since you never know what could happen in the future, we urge you to take a closer look at your estate plan today. This could include details regarding what is to happen if you become incapacitated at any point.

Our free report – Fifteen Common Reasons To Do Estate Planning – is one that we hope you’ll download in the near future. With this by your side, you’ll soon understand why you need to learn more about the estate planning process.

There’s a good chance that you will never be involved in a motorcycle accident, but you want to be prepared for anything that could happen. This will give you peace of mind each time you take to the road.
