Wisconsin Personal Injury Law: What do Personal Injury Attorneys Do?

Stephanie Thompson, Estate Planning Attorney of Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC · Jan 21, 2014 ·

I cannot recall exactly how times I have been asked what I do but it has been many.  I tell people that I am a personal injury attorney.  Generally, the conversation stops unless the person was in an accident and wants to share their either good or bad experience.  The question that seldom asked is: what does a personal injury attorney do?

Of course, I can only answer what I do for my clients.  There are many good personal injury attorneys so I assume many do the same but I would like to think that, at Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC, we do it in a different way, a better way.

The first thing I do once retained is to get as much information there is about the accident.  This includes finding out about insurances including your medical insurance, your own car insurance even if the accident was solely caused by another, and of course the wrongdoer’s insurance information.  Many times, multiple insurance policies apply in an accident and without the correct information it will be difficult for a client to receive what he or she is entitled to.

Next is dealing with my client’s injuries and the impact it has had on his or her family.  Many times, an injured victim cannot work so we have to make sure that we explore all avenues of continuing to obtaining income to help the family.  Often times, payment for medical services can be challenging and insurance companies are not always quick to step to the forefront and accept responsibility for payment of these expenses.  We make sure that all of those issues are resolved so that the client and his or her family does not have to worry about the stress unpaid medical bills can cause.

Making sure the client gets the appropriate medical attention is also a necessity if a client hopes to recover from the accident.  Sometimes clients tend to explore medical alternatives of which are not providing benefit.  By regularly communicating and actually listening to the client and the client’s complaints we can make suggestions for alternative medical treatment that may better serve our client.

Finally, realistic conversations with clients about the value of their case are essential.  Many times, lawyers tell clients what they want to hear as opposed to the reality of the value of a personal injury claim, the effect on the client and his or her family when a lawsuit is initiated, as well as what is actually required of a trial.

I am a personal injury attorney because I get great pleasure helping people navigate the complexity of the legal system to help level the playing field against big insurance companies, corporations, employers and the government.  We do this with a team of trained individuals who treat our clients as though their case is the most important case because, to the client, it is the most important case!  Our clients are not files or cases, they are people just like you and me.

If you have been injured in an accident of any kind please contact me for a free, no cost, no obligation consultation.  We take these cases on a contingency fee basis so there is never a fee for our services unless and until there is a recovery.  In the Madison area call (608) 824-8540, in the Baraboo area (608) 356-3961, statewide call (866) 455-2993, email at mark@kh-law.net or check out our website at https://khtlawyers.com for more information.  At Krueger Hernandez & Thompson SC, we listen, we care, we get results!
