Flu and tetanus shots are often injected into the upper arm shoulder area. It is not uncommon to have shoulder pain following a vaccination given in the shoulder area. However, in some cases the pain can be severe and can last much longer than normal. Those severe cases of severe and long standing pain is known as Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA). SIRVA can lead to extreme and long lasting pain, limited range of motion and other shoulder complications.
Most flu shots are given in the Deltoid muscle of the arm. For that reason, the flu shot is the most common cause of SIRVA. A person with SIRVA would experience excruciating pain and limitation of activities within days and weeks following the shot. SIRVA is a very rare injury and SIRVA is not caused by the vaccination but rather the injection.
As indicated, severe shoulder pain is the most common symptom and it can occur as soon as two hours following a flu vaccine. In addition to long standing and intense shoulder pain with limited range of motion other injuries such as shoulder tendonitis and bursitis have been reported following a vaccination. Generally, SIRVA is treated with pain medication and physical therapy. In rare but severe cases surgery is necessary to repair damage to the shoulder’s tendons and ligaments.
